Workshop Description:
Dr. Hattaway, an accomplished dentist, and Laureli, a seasoned ASL interpreter and Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) present a comprehensive overview of fundamental dental concepts. Dr. Hattaway will talk through a dental appointment from start to finish. While Laureli will delve into specialized sign concepts crucial for accurate interpretation in dental settings. Engage in insightful discussions on ethical scenarios and learn to apply Demand Control Schema (DC-S) to gracefully navigate potential challenges during appointments. Don't miss this unique opportunity to enhance your skills and confidence in dental interpreting.

Presenter Bios:
Dr. Hattaway earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, a leading and innovative school for dental education. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology/animal biology from Idaho State University. During his residency in advanced general dentistry at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, he focused on full mouth rehabilitation, including dental implants. He also provided comprehensive care to patients at the Seidman Cancer Center, when they were at their highest risk for dental decay due to radiation and chemotherapy. He was awarded the Resident of the Year Award, showcasing his commitment and clinical expertise to the program. As a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry, Dr. Hattaway continually refines his knowledge and explores the most conservative techniques in dentistry. His wife, Laureli, introduced him to the Deaf community in 2014. Over the years, Dr. Hattaway has volunteered at Deaf Action Center, Plano ISD Regional Day School for the Deaf, and has made lasting friendships with Deaf and hard of hearing people, as well as interpreters. Dr. Hattaway's goal is to go back to school and earn an Associate's Degree in Deaf Studies.

Laureli Hattaway earned her Associate's degree in Deaf Studies at Oakland Community College and her Bachelor's degree in ASL Interpreting at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan. She is currently working as a certified BEI Advanced Interpreter in Dallas, TX. Laureli also earned her RDA (Registered Dental Assistant) license in 2022. Laureli and her husband Shad Hattaway opened their dental practice, Indian Creek Dental in Carrollton, TX, in 2017 with the intention of making it a fully inclusive office for Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard-of-Hearing individuals. They work tirelessly to educate staff members as well as fellow doctors about what is expected from medical professionals to accommodate patients who use sign language to communicate. Laureli is thrilled that both the medical and interpreting communities are interested in what Team Hattaway can teach and feels enormous gratitude for the ability and opportunity to do so.
