Description: 
Provides high quality of care for students at Tennessee School for the Deaf. School nursing is a specialized nursing practice that enriches the well-being, academic success, lifelong achievement, and overall health of students. School nurses serve a unique role in the school community and oversee all school health services and to promote health education. Research shows that healthy children are successful learners, so school nurses advocate for the holistic approach of supporting the physical, emotional, mental, and social health of students. 

Qualifications:   
• Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate Required 
• Associate of Science in Nursing Preferred 
• Experience in pediatric or hospital setting preferred 
• SLPI:ASL rating of Intermediate or above preferred American Sign Language (ASL) sign classes and skill development support available for selected qualified applicants who do not meet the rating level. 

Terms of Employment: Part-time PRN position

Salary: Pay dependent on education and experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
• Assess the health needs of WTSD students and provide optimum care. 
• Teach good health practices to students and the staff working with students. 
• Maintain a working knowledge of syndromes impacting deaf and hard of hearing children. 
• Provide in-service and other supports to teachers and staff working with challenging or new medical diagnoses. 
• Work effectively with professional and para-professional staff for the physical and emotional well-being of TSD students. 
• Securely maintain student health information and files to ensure HIPPA and FERPA are followed. 
• Manage medications and medication distribution. 
• Provide healthcare to students and staff 
• Perform health screenings 
Coordinate referrals to private healthcare providers 
• Serve as liaisons between school personnel, family, and community healthcare providers to ensure a healthy school environment 
• Monitoring immunizations, managing communicable diseases, and assessing the school environment as to prevent injury and ensure safety 
• Overseeing infection control measures 
• Actively participating in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying, and emergencies that may occur at school 
• Overseeing medication administration, healthcare procedures, and the development of healthcare plans 
• Overseeing vision, hearing, body mass index, and mental health screening procedures 
• Making decisions related to the delegation of healthcare tasks as directed by state laws and professional practice guidance 
• Providing health advice to school educational teams, such as the Committee on Special Education and the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) team

The applicant selected for this position must complete full background checks including fingerprinting. Background checks will be completed through TBI, FBI, DCS, TN Registry of Sexual Offenders, and TN Registry of Abuse.
