Center-based programs are available for learners who are deaf and hard of hearing at the preschool, elementary, and secondary levels. In general, learners who attend the center-based resource program receive a significant portion of their academic instruction by a teacher of deaf and hard of hearing in a self-contained classroom. The languages of instruction used include American Sign Language and English via spoken English paired with cued English using the system of Cued Speech, the exposure to one or both being determined by a child’s IFSP or IEP team. A major emphasis of the program is to support learners’ communication and language development impacted by hearing loss, including listening and spoken language, and/or sign or cued language skills. Learners participate in general education classes as determined by their IEP teams.
