Established in 1996, the Jackson Center for Independent Living (JCIL) is a community-based, non-residential, consumer-controlled nonprofit organization that empowers people with disabilities—including those who are Deaf, DeafBlind, or Hard of Hearing—to live independently and fully participate in their communities. JCIL is committed to providing quality services that promote equal access to communication, community resources, and inclusive events that foster meaningful interactions between Deaf and hearing individuals.
Services:
Information & Referral
JCIL maintains up-to-date data on local agencies and services, offering accurate and timely information about community resources. We also provide referrals to additional services essential for independent living, such as job placement, home health care, and transportation.
Peer Support
Peer-to-peer support is a vital aspect of Independent Living. JCIL connects individuals with peers who offer encouragement, guidance, and shared experiences to foster independence and confidence.
Skills Training
Skills training is a key part of the journey toward independence. JCIL helps individuals learn everything from daily living tasks and communication methods to managing personal assistants and using adaptive equipment. A wide range of training is offered and specialized topics are taught by qualified professionals.
Home Modifications
JCIL helps individuals make necessary modifications to their homes, allowing them to live independently rather than in nursing homes or institutions.
Transition from Nursing Homes
JCIL assists individuals in transitioning from nursing homes or institutions back into their community. Services include home modifications, peer support, and individualized planning for successful reintegration.
Advocacy
JCIL represents consumer interests with businesses and community leaders to address issues and services to educate the community on disability related issues.
Youth Transition
JCIL supports youth with disabilities in their transition from school to adult life. Services focus on higher education, employment readiness, and achieving Independent Living.
Equipment Program
JCIL operates an equipment loan program that provides items such as walkers, wheelchairs, and other assistive devices for short- or long-term use. Permanent donations are also available depending on individual needs. Community equipment donations are essential in helping us support independence for all.
