"Interpreters are key members of the educational team for students who are dependent upon sign language interpretation to access the general curriculum and educational environment. This book reports a multifaceted 5-year investigation into the patterns of practice of educational interpreters working in K-12 school settings with children who are deaf and hard of hearing in the United States.

Sign language interpreters often offer the primary avenue of access for deaf and hard of hearing students in public schools. More than 80% of all deaf children today are mainstreamed, and few of their teachers sign well enough to provide them with full access. As a result, many K-12 interpreters perform multiple roles beyond interpreting. Yet, very little is known about what they actually do and what factors inform their moment-to-moment decisions.

Three videotapes discuss the special issues and problems facing administrators, interpreters, and teachers and offer a wide range of solutions. The Administrator videotape addresses interpreter's job descriptions, supervising and evaluating interpreters, complying with PL 94-142 in meeting students' differing communicative needs, interpreters' ethical standards, expectations, and dilemmas, recruiting competent interpreters.
