Workshop Description:
Working in a mental health hospital setting can be challenging for interpreters. This workshop will identify common challenges and help new and experienced interpreters to more easily navigate through an inpatient hospital in a mental health setting.

About the Presenter
Beth Moss is a graduate from McLennan Community College in Waco, TX with an associate degree in Interpreter Training and from Maryville College in Maryville, TN with a bachelor’s degree in Interpretation and ASL/Deaf Studies. She is currently a student at Arkansas State University’s online school where she is pursuing her master’s degree in Public Administration. Beth has worked as a community interpreter and a staff interpreter in Nashville, TN, where she began specializing in mental health interpreting. She attended MHIT in 2015, completed her practicum, and received her QMHI certificate from the Alabama Department of Mental Health. She created and provided several introductory mental health trainings for the local interpreters in Nashville and began training mental health facilities on how to work with deaf and hard of hearing patients. Beth joined the team of the Office of Deaf Services at the Alabama Department of Mental Health in 2019 as a staff interpreter. She is based at a state psychiatric hospital where she works with the Communication Access Team to provide access to communication for deaf patients on a mixed deaf and hearing unit.
