This workshop will examine the current research regarding the factors that inform the interpreting process.

Interpreters work hard at performing their interpretations for everyday conversations and assignments, but what happens when it is time to voice in a higher register for a presentation or a lecture? In this workshop, we are going to take a dive into what all goes into adequately prepare for higher register voicing, focusing on situation appropriate affect, constructing an equivalent message for hearing consumers and constructing appropriate word and idiom choices.

Medical is a setting where interpreters are most frequently requested to provide services. This often leads to interpreters not preparing adequately due to their presumptive familiarity. Amy Lankheit will focus on common procedures, vocabulary, and best practices while interpreting for patients and providers. Amy will discuss the importance of interpreters owning a large arsenal of classifiers and their application to medical interpreting. HIPAA and its applications to interpreters will also be addressed.

  • Participants will identify what groups are impacted by the choices and behaviors of an interpreter.

  • Participants will evaluate the importance of supporting versus competing with their teammates.

This year EII will join in collaboration with TRID to provide virtual workshops specifically on educational interpreting. Monday-Wednesday, TSD Staff, EII participants and TRID members are all welcome. Friday evening June 25 and Saturday June 26, EII will be held in conjunction with TRID’s virtual annual conference.

Summer EII welcomes ASL Story Teller and Performer Dack Virnig and Antwan Campbell Educational Consultant for Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Interpreter Support with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as presenters.

Workshop Description:
Working in a mental health hospital setting can be challenging for interpreters. This workshop will identify common challenges and help new and experienced interpreters to more easily navigate through an inpatient hospital in a mental health setting.
